Spain
Ah Spain!
We honestly had never had the bug to get to Spain, but it worked out so well as a stop home from Ghana, that we decided to take advantage of it - and we’re so glad we did!
We flew into Madrid and really only had about 24 hours in the city. We stayed in Hotel Regina Madrid. It was such a fun welcome to Spain with THE most prime location. We just walked to all the sites in Madrid and we were surrounded by shops and yummy food. If you plan a trip to Madrid - stay here!! The breakfast is worth it itself! :) The streets of Madrid reminded me a lot of Venice - there were so many little streets and shops to get lost in and it was so fun just walking around and exploring. And of course we ate our share of churros and chocolate in that 24 hours! Haha! We also went to Retiro Park (basically the central park of Madrid) and it was SO awesome. We rented a little row-boat and the girls LOVED it. There were musicians all around and the girls were happy - it was just a good little outing.
We also visited the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint’s Madrid Temple and it’s now one of my favorites in the whole world. This was such a special memory for me!
We left Madrid for Segovia, a historic city just north of Madrid. Honestly, we knew next to nothing about Segovia before going. It ended up being one of our favorite days in all of Spain! Don’t miss Segovia! There is a massive aqueduct and an awesome castle. It was a fun day that the whole family enjoyed.
After Segovia we visited Consuegra, the cutest little town that has 12 stunning windmills and another castle that you can explore. We didn’t know you could drive to the top (!!!) so we hiked up a million stairs through the town and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the day. Such a fun memory! The views from the top were out of this world.
From Consuegra, we headed back north for a bit to Toledo! We LOVED Toledo. We stayed in Sercotel Hotel Alfonso VI and it was an amazing hotel! The dining hall felt like you were eating in a castle next to the knights in armor! Haha! We had a great stay and highly recommend it if you ever find yourself in Toledo! The view from our room was incredible - we looked out over a bunch of little streets in the city and we were right in the middle of all the FUN. Just exploring the small streets and sampling all the food was such a highlight in Toledo!
After a couple of days in Toledo, we drove to Southern Spain to a town called Frigiliana. It was my favorite town in all of Spain, hands down. IT WAS AMAZING. It really felt like Greece. We stayed in Frigiliana four nights and I could’ve stayed longer. It was also nice to stay in one place a little longer and it was a fun place with the girls to just roam the streets of this town.
From Frigiliana, we worked our way towards Barcelona. We stopped in Peniscola for two nights which is where the flu wiped us out. We still enjoyed the town, but probably didn’t get to see as much as we would have if we were healthy!
We were still recovering in Barcelona, but we got to see the La Sagrada Familia and it is the most amazing church I have ever been to. It truly felt like a fairy tale to see it - it was hard to comprehend that this building was REAL. We also went to Guell Park and that was really neat - a good thing to do with kids too! There is a main street, La Rumbla, that has alllllll the shopping and food you could ever hope for. We spent one evening walking down this street and loved it.
No regrets about spending some time in Spain! :)
